In 2015, avian influenza in the United States caused a great blow to China's white feather broiler industry. In 2015 and 2016, the number of Chinese ancestral chickens was reduced to 720200 and 648600, down 114.1% and 137.7% respectively from the high point in 2013.
The United States is one of China's important importers of breeding chickens, and the avian influenza epidemic has exacerbated the supply risk of breeding chickens in China. In the past five years, China's white feather breeder importing countries are mainly concentrated in New Zealand. However, due to the detection of diseases in New Zealand's anweijie Zudai chicken in March 2021, China suspended imports from New Zealand and restarted imports from the United States in September. In 21 years, the proportion of imports from the United States increased significantly to 57%. According to the data of the General Administration of customs, the white feather breeder introduced by China from January to February 2022 came from the United States. At present, the General Administration of Customs has announced to prohibit the import of Canadian poultry and its related products into China, but has not banned the import of poultry from the United States. The subsequent interpretation and import of avian influenza in the United States still need to be closely tracked.
