China’s special gas industry has experienced 30 years of development and precipitation. With the continuous accumulation of experience and technological progress, leading enterprises in the industry have made breakthroughs in some products, reached international standards, gradually realized import substitution, and provided objective conditions for the localization of special gases. At the demand level, several 8-inch and 12 inch large-scale integrated circuit production lines and high-generation panel production lines have been continuously built in recent years. In order to ensure stable supply, timely service and cost control, the demand for localization of special gases is urgent. In addition, in recent years, the state has successively issued a series of policies aimed at promoting the localization of key materials, including special gases. Under the influence of multiple factors such as technological progress, demand pull and policy stimulus, the localization trend of special gas industry is obvious.
In the mid-1980s, the industry was in its infancy. American Gas Chemical Products Corporation (APCI) entered China and became the first overseas gas enterprise to invest in China. It mainly sells industrial gas equipment such as air separation and oxygen production units to Chinese steel companies and chemical companies.
From 1999 to 2007, the industry was in a preliminary development period. China’s electronic gas industry has initially formed, but the industrial foundation is relatively weak. In the early stage, China’s semiconductor manufacturers were basically wholly foreign-owned or joint ventures, and the technology and equipment were directly introduced, basically ignoring the drive to China’s relevant material supporting industries, resulting in the long-term development lag of China’s electronic gas.
From 2008 to 2018, the industry was in a growth period. On the one hand, the state has successively issued relevant policies to support and encourage the development of the industry; On the other hand, foreign semiconductor manufacturers have increased investment in China, driving the further growth of China’s semiconductor industry chain. In addition, Chinese enterprises have also made breakthroughs in electronic industry technology through independent innovation, successfully changed polycrystalline silicon to monocrystalline silicon, expanded and promoted the demand for special gas chemicals and the speed of product upgrading through process innovation and change. The superposition of these factors makes China’s special gas industry grow continuously.
