According to China Science Daily, recently, the team of academician Yu Shuhong of the University of science and technology of China, in cooperation with the teams of Professor Yao Hongbin and Professor Ni Yong, is committed to solving the contradiction between high energy density and fast charging performance of lithium-ion batteries, and proposed and prepared a new double gradient graphite cathode material to realize 60% charging of lithium-ion batteries in 6 minutes. Relevant achievements were recently published in scientific progress.
At present, electric vehicles driven by lithium-ion batteries are favored by people because of their energy conservation and environmental protection. However, the charging time of electric vehicles is much longer than that of traditional fuel vehicles, which greatly reduces the sense of use experience. The main reason is the poor rate performance of graphite negative electrode in lithium-ion battery, which limits the rapid charging capacity of electric vehicles.
In order to improve the rate performance of graphite negative electrode, the traditional strategy is to make the graphite electrode porous or thin. However, these methods often sacrifice the energy density of the prepared battery. Yu Shuhong's team started with designing the electrode structure to improve the fast charging performance of lithium-ion batteries while ensuring the energy density.
The research team developed a self-assembly technology of low viscosity non polymer binder slurry, mixed copper coated graphite negative electrode particles and copper nanowires into slurry in ethanol solution, and successfully constructed a simulated and optimized double gradient structure by using the difference of settlement velocity of graphite particles with different sizes in the slurry.
The researchers found that the lithium-ion battery based on the new double gradient graphite cathode material was charged from zero to 60% and 80% in 5.6 minutes and 11.4 minutes, respectively, while maintaining high energy density.

The global share increased from 77.7% in 2020 to 86.1% in 2021.
Dongguan securities research report said that China is the world's leading producer of cathode materials, and the proportion of shipments has increased to about 70% in the past two years. By the end of 2021, the company had a finished cathode material production capacity of 120000 tons and a graphitization capacity of 42000 tons.
Guangdong Dowstone Technology Co.Ltd(300409) 5 said on the interactive platform on May 17 that the Lanzhou base of the company plans to build an annual output of 5000 tons of carbon nanotube powder, 30000 tons of carbon nanotube slurry and 150000 tons of silicon carbon, graphite cathode materials and graphitization processing and production project.
