Director General of the International Atomic Energy Agency: transparency must be ensured in the scrapping of Fukushima reactor

Kyodo News Agency reported on May 21 that International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) director general Grossi held a press conference in Tokyo on the 20th. On the Fukushima Daiichi nuclear power plant of Tokyo Electric Power Company, which is preparing to discharge the treated water into the sea, he said that "the reactor scrapping operation needs to be implemented in a unit of decades. Transparency and serious progress must be ensured", emphasizing the attitude of continuing to cooperate with the Japanese government.

Around the discharge of treated water into the sea, China, South Korea and other neighboring countries of Japan expressed concern. "The procedure is in line with international standards, which are also accepted by countries that express their concerns," Grossi said

Grossi went to the first nuclear power plant on the 19th and inspected the storage tanks for treated water. He evaluated the preparations for reactor scrapping and sea discharge as "exceeding expectations".

At the press conference, Grossi mentioned Fukushima residents. He said that "residents have suffered psychological trauma due to the nuclear accident and have been affected since. They must be respected to the greatest extent", stressing the need for sustained support from a humanitarian point of view.
