The researchers of Russia's "vector" National Science Center for Virology and Biotechnology (hereinafter referred to as "vector" center) have developed an automatic detection kit (hereinafter referred to as the detection kit), which can be used to detect orthopox virus including monkeypox virus. The laboratory test of the test box has been successfully completed.
Monkeypox virus and smallpox virus belong to the genus orthopox virus of poxviridae. "Vector" center recently announced that this detection box can successfully detect the positive pox virus from experimental animal samples. Laboratory tests carried out in the clinical mode show that the detection box can effectively detect positive pox viruses such as cowpox virus, monkeypox virus and vaccinia virus. In addition, the relevant equipment of this test box is matched, easy to analyze samples, and visually record results, so that the test can be carried out under non laboratory conditions.
According to the World Health Organization, the symptoms of monkeypox virus infection are similar to smallpox, but the clinical severity is relatively mild. The incubation period is usually 6 to 13 days, which may be as long as 21 days. The researchers of the "vector" center said that because a variety of pox viruses have the characteristics of "cross immunity", human smallpox vaccination is also effective in the prevention and treatment of monkeypox.
According to Russian media reports, "vector" center submitted its application for registration of the fourth generation smallpox vaccine to the Russian Ministry of health on 18. The center believes that although human beings have long eliminated smallpox, with the melting of local permafrost in recent years, there is still a risk of smallpox virus remaining in the permafrost.
Monkeypox is a viral zoonosis. Monkeypox virus can be transmitted from animals to people through close contact. Although it is not easy to spread from person to person, it may also be infected in close contact with patients. The initial symptoms of monkeypox infection include fever, headache, muscle soreness, back pain, swollen lymph nodes and so on. Later, it can develop into a large-scale rash on the face and body. Most patients recover within a few weeks, but some patients have serious symptoms or even death.
