China’s new generation of coal to oil technology has reached the international advanced level

The reporter learned from Dalian Institute of Chemical Physics, Chinese Academy of Sciences that a new generation of coal to oil technology with independent intellectual property rights – “carbon supported cobalt based slurry bed syngas to oil technology”, developed by researcher Ding Yunjie and researcher Zhu Hejun of the Institute, has recently passed the appraisal of scientific and technological achievements organized by Petrochina Company Limited(601857) and the Chemical Industry Federation. This technology is highly innovative and solves the technical problems of the traditional cobalt based catalyst for Fischer Tropsch synthesis, such as high price and poor selectivity of liquid products.

It is reported that the high-performance cobalt based catalyst developed by Ding Yunjie and Zhu Hejun has excellent activity, diesel fraction selectivity and stability, filling the technical gap in China’s cobalt based Fischer Tropsch synthesis slurry bed industry, and the overall technology has reached the international advanced level.

Rich coal, poor oil and little gas are the basic characteristics of China’s energy resources. With the sustained and rapid development of China’s economy, the dependence on foreign oil continues to grow, reaching 73.6% in 2020. At present, China’s primary energy consumption structure is still dominated by coal, which accounts for more than 56% of the total energy consumption. For a long time to come, coal will still be China’s main energy. The research and development of coal based clean fuels and chemicals is of strategic significance to alleviate the shortage of Petrochina Company Limited(601857) supply, realize the substitution of petrochemical raw materials, clean oil products and clean and efficient utilization of coal, and ensure national energy security.

At present, the carbon supported cobalt based slurry bed syngas oil production demonstration device using a new generation of coal to oil technology has been jointly developed and constructed by Dalian Institute of chemistry, Chinese Academy of Sciences, Shaanxi Yanchang Petroleum Yulin coal chemical Co., Ltd. and Beijing Petrochemical Engineering Co., Ltd., and achieved production and efficiency. The unit started construction in Yulin in 2013 and realized 40% load operation in 2017, producing qualified liquefied gas, stable light hydrocarbon, Fischer Tropsch light wax, Fischer Tropsch heavy wax and other products. 85% load operation will be realized in 2019 and 100% load operation will be realized in July 2020. In 2020, Petrochina Company Limited(601857) and the Chemical Industry Federation organized an expert group to conduct 72 hours of continuous assessment and calibration of the industrial demonstration unit. The unit realized 103% load operation, and the total conversion rate of syngas reached 98.7%, providing solid technical support for the construction of subsequent large-scale commercial units.

The manager of Yulin Petrochemical Co., Ltd. can reduce the energy consumption of CO2 synthesis unit and reduce the energy consumption of carbon dioxide produced by Yulin Petrochemical Co., Ltd. In addition, the waste catalyst produced by the operation of carbon supported cobalt based catalyst can burn off the carbon carrier and recover metal cobalt after simple incineration, realizing the green environmental protection goal of low solid waste or even no solid waste.
