When the whole automobile industry chain cooperates to decarbonize

The global wave of “carbon neutralization” promotes the momentum of accelerating the low-carbon transformation of the automobile industry in various countries. China’s automobile industry has increasingly become the leader of the transformation and development of the world’s automobile industry. Under the “double carbon” goal, how can China’s automobile industry achieve the goal of carbon reduction and decarbonization in the upstream and downstream industrial chain? This is a topic of constant concern and discussion in the industry.

Recently, the energy saving and new energy vehicle development report 2021, which is led by China Automotive Data Co., Ltd. and supported by BHP Billiton group, was released. The report shows that under the “double carbon” goal, promoting the synergy of the automobile industry and promoting the development of energy-saving and new energy vehicles has become an important measure for carbon reduction and decarbonization of China’s automobile industry.

This report has focused on the research in the field of energy-saving and new energy vehicles for seven consecutive years. However, in the face of the “double carbon” goal and new opportunities for transformation, the report constructs the carbon emission calculation model of China’s automobile use for the first time, so as to provide basic support for the automobile industry to implement the “double carbon” goal; For the first time, the development status and new trend of power battery are systematically evaluated from the perspective of technical route, safety and raw material supply; It is the first time to put forward the road map of vehicle electrification promoted by scene, region and vehicle type in 2035.

Wu Zhixin, deputy general manager of China Automotive Technology Research Center, said that the development of energy-saving and new energy vehicles is not only a strategic direction to ensure China’s energy security, but also a strategic way to achieve the “double carbon” goal, but also the only way to strengthen China’s automotive industry. In order to better support the energy-saving and low-carbon development and electrification transformation of China’s automobile industry, the report issued by China automobile center aims to provide reference for the competent authorities to issue automobile industry policies and support enterprises to formulate relevant strategies. In 2021, entrusted by the Ministry of industry and information technology, China automobile center carried out the research on the implementation road map of automobile industry facing the goal of carbon neutralization, and comprehensively analyzed the road of low-carbon transformation of automobile industry from the perspectives of policy, standard, market, technology and industry. Therefore, this part of the research content is also included in the report.

“BHP Billiton is committed to providing responsible, safe and reliable resource guarantee for the Shanxi Guoxin Energy Corporation Limited(600617) automobile and battery industry chain. The cooperation with China Automotive Technology Research Center’s China Automotive Data Co., Ltd. is a vivid case of cooperation between the upstream and downstream of the whole industry chain, beneficial impact on the industry and joint response to environmental challenges.” Pan Wenyi, chief commercial officer of BHP Billiton, believes that China’s development process has a vigorous pace and broad prospects, and China’s next economic growth will also be accompanied by less environmental footprint.

Pan Wenyi said that China’s new energy vehicle industry is developing rapidly, and a huge new energy vehicle market contains huge business opportunities. At present, China is the world’s largest new energy vehicle market, and the world’s leading battery manufacturers gather here. According to the current development trend, it will be very important to ensure the reliability and sustainable supply of nickel and other raw materials required for power battery production.

In the next decade, the demand for nickel in the battery industry will surge by more than 500%. It is expected that the demand for nickel resources in the next 30 years will quadruple the output in the past 30 years. At present, 85% of BHP Billiton’s nickel metal production has shifted to the production and supply chain of electric vehicles, compared with 21% in 2017 and less than 5% in previous years.
