Recently, the Ministry of science and technology of Wuhan announced the list of the first batch of special export service bases in the Department of natural resources and the Ministry of Commerce of the central region, and the only one of the first batch of the Ministry of science and technology of the people’s Republic of China. This selection will further promote the development of Hubei geographic information industry and promote the export of geographic information services such as surveying, mapping and remote sensing.
The first batch of national geographic information export service bases announced this time are only five, namely Chaoyang Park of Beijing Beijing Centergate Technologies (Holding) Co.Ltd(000931) science and Technology Park, xihongqiao base of Shanghai China Beidou industrial technology innovation, Moganshan high tech Industrial Development Zone in Huzhou, Zhejiang, science and Technology Park of Hubei Wuhan University and Shaanxi Aerospace economic and Technological Development Zone.
Geographic information service is to provide users with geographic information products and services by using technologies such as surveying and mapping, remote sensing, satellite positioning and navigation. For example, the functions of vehicle navigation and mobile phone positioning commonly used in people’s life are the technical support of geographic information service.
Last year, after the selection of national characteristic export service bases was launched, the Provincial Department of natural resources and the Provincial Department of Commerce worked together to recommend Wuhan University Science and technology park to apply for characteristic export service bases in the field of geographic information through expert evaluation, public announcement and other links.
Geographic information industry is a sunrise industry related to the national economy and the people’s livelihood. Since 2012, the annual compound growth rate of the output value of the global geographic information industry has reached 15% to 30%, and the total output value has reached 540 billion US dollars in 2020.
The development of Hubei geographic information industry started earlier and has grown up a number of excellent geographic information enterprises and teams. At present, the output value of geographic information and related industries in the province is about 51.6 billion yuan, with 120000 employees, ranking in the forefront of the country. In 2021, the first prize of 25 National Geographic Information Science and technology progress awards accounted for 4 seats, and 108 excellent engineering Gold Awards accounted for 16 seats. At the same time, there are also bottlenecks in industrial development, such as unbalanced structure, core technical barriers at the bottom to be broken through, and low conversion rate of scientific and technological achievements.
“This selection not only affirms the good foundation of Hubei geographic information service export, but also provides an opportunity for Hubei geographic information service enterprises to speed up their ‘going out’.” Peng Jianghua, director of the Geographic Information Office of the Provincial Department of natural resources, introduced that the geographic information service export base is an important starting point to promote the adjustment, optimization and upgrading of the geographic information industry structure. Hubei will rely on the export base to promote the geographic information industry to extend the industrial chain, expand the export scale, explore new markets and form an advantage in international competition.

At present, there are more than 10000 employees in the field of geographic information in the park, with an annual operating income of more than 6.6 billion yuan, 41 export business enterprises and an annual export volume of more than 340 million yuan.
The scale of Wuhan University Science Park is still expanding. Last year, the foundation of its qinglingchuang Shenzhen New Industries Biomedical Engineering Co.Ltd(300832) base was laid and started. The project covers an area of more than 180 Mu and is expected to be completed within five years with a total investment of 1.4 billion yuan. The base plans to introduce Beidou application industry, new energy industry, high-end intelligent manufacturing, environmental protection industry, new materials, Internet and electronic information industry, modern service industry and related upstream and downstream industrial chains.
The relevant person in charge of Wuhan University Science and Technology Park said that the park took this selection as an opportunity to speed up the construction of the park as a gathering area for the export of geographic information services in Hubei and drive the large-scale growth of geographic information service trade in the province.
