Speed up the standardization process of automotive chips! The Ministry of industry and information technology plans to focus on seven sub categories

The Ministry of industry and information technology today (March 18) released the key points of automobile standardization in 2022, proposing to carry out the research on the chip demand of automobile enterprises and the technical capacity of automobile chip industry, and jointly study and release the automobile chip standard system in conjunction with related industries such as integrated circuits and semiconductor devices promote the research and project approval of MCU control chip, sensing chip, communication chip, storage chip, security chip, computing chip and special chip for new energy vehicles and other standards. Start the pre research of general specifications and standards such as automotive chip function safety, information security, environmental reliability and electromagnetic compatibility.

As we all know, the barriers of the automotive chip industry are relatively high. The chip must pass various standard testing and certification before it can “get on the bus”. Generally speaking, a chip takes two years to develop and two to three years to be certified. After entering the industrial chain, it has a supply cycle of five to ten years. Therefore, under strict technical standards and ultra long supply cycle, chip enterprises, automotive electronics manufacturers and vehicle enterprises have formed a strong binding supply chain.

However, China lacks a sound automotive chip standard system, and there is no unified technical standard language in the upstream and downstream. It is more to use international standards for automotive chip testing and evaluation. At present, aec-q series certification is the only way for chip design enterprises to enter the automotive field. AEC, fully known as the Automotive Electronics Council, is a standardization organization initiated and established by Chrysler, Ford and general motors in 1993.

▍ standardization system helps improve China’s automotive chip supply chain

This is an opportunity to establish a standard system:

On the one hand, China has a huge automobile market, and the process of electrification and intellectualization is changing with each passing day. Most of the international standards evolved from the 1980s and 1990s. At present, many new technical requirements are not accommodated, and the technical requirements of some new parts cannot be reflected.

On the other hand, since the second half of 2020, the problem of automobile “lack of core” has begun to appear, and now the supply situation is still severe. “Congenital” problems such as tight production capacity and lack of flexibility in the supply chain are the main reasons. In the context of lack of cores, Chinese vehicle manufacturers actively embrace domestic cores from the perspective of stabilizing the supply chain. However, the development of China’s domestic automotive chip industry lags behind. It is necessary to improve the ecological chain of the whole industry from the national level, including standard system, design, testing, certification, streaming, application, etc.

and the standardization system helps to speed up the improvement of China’s automotive chip supply chain as Zou Guangcai, Deputy Secretary General of China Automotive chip industry innovation strategic alliance, said earlier, the standard system is the technical language to connect and unify the upstream and downstream of the industrial chain only when the standard system is established can the upstream of the industry know what standard to design according to and the downstream know what standard to select chips according to , “at present, there is no streaming production line for complex automotive chips in China. Now key automotive chips, such as muc and SOC with more than 16 bits, are streaming in other regions. We should have the guarantee ability of this bottom line.”

At present, automotive chips have been widely used in many fields, such as power, body, cabin, chassis and safety. According to the prediction of China Automobile Industry Association, the number of single chip of new energy vehicles will exceed 1400 in 2022.

In the future, local suppliers of automotive chips are expected to benefit from standardization rules and broad market demand. Xu Yong, an analyst at Ping An Securities, said that Chinese chip manufacturers are making efforts, and power and MCU are expected to take the lead in breaking through: Zhuzhou Crrc Times Electric Co.Ltd(688187) , Starpower Semiconductor Ltd(603290) and Wuxi Nce Power Co.Ltd(605111) and other companies, and the penetration rate of vehicle specification power semiconductor products is increasing; Chinese manufacturers have begun to make achievements on 32-bit MCU, including jiefa technology and Byd Company Limited(002594) semiconductor. In addition, Gigadevice Semiconductor (Beijing) Inc(603986) ‘s core product lines are memory and 32-bit general-purpose MCU, which are also recommended by the analyst.

▍ related work has been put on the agenda

In terms of standardization in the automotive industry, the National Automotive Technical Standardization Committee (hereinafter referred to as the “automobile Standardization Committee”) is the only technical organization in China. At the end of December 2021, the automobile Standardization Committee and the electromagnetic compatibility sub Technical Committee jointly established an automobile chip standard research working group (hereinafter referred to as the “working group”) with relevant sub technical committees such as intelligent networked vehicles and electric vehicles.

At this stage, the working group has 88 member units, including 23 vehicle enterprises, 43 parts enterprises, and 22 technical institutions and universities.

The working group held an online meeting at the end of last year, which was chaired by Zhu Tong of the Institute of standards of China automobile center and attended by more than 150 experts from vehicle enterprises, parts enterprises and technical institutions, including: Byd Company Limited(002594) , ideal car, Contemporary Amperex Technology Co.Limited(300750) , Bosch, SAIC Volkswagen, Beiqi Foton Motor Co.Ltd(600166) , Hesai technology, xinwangwei, Xinchi technology, sushi Yite, Airui optoelectronics, Dongfeng Automobile Co.Ltd(600006) , Xinzhou technology, Scully Suzhou Guoxin, etc
