China has made a major breakthrough in large-scale industrialized preparation of high strength, high toughness and low density steel

On January 5, the reporter of science and technology daily learned from Jiangyin high tech new area that the world’s first high-strength, high toughness and low-density steel plate produced by 100 ton electric furnace smelting process was recently launched in Jiangyin Xingcheng Special Steel Co., Ltd. (hereinafter referred to as “Xingcheng Special Steel”) of CITIC Pacific special steel group.

This is a new breakthrough in the large-scale industrial production technology of the product after years of research by Xingcheng Special Steel and Northern Institute of materials science and engineering. It is also a re innovation of the original research based on the production practice of 40 ton electric furnace smelting process in 2016.

In the view of industry experts, this major process and technology breakthrough makes China at the international leading level in the field of industrial production technology of high strength, high toughness and low density steel, and marks that China has become the only country in the world to master the technology of large-scale production of high strength, high toughness and low density steel.

According to relevant experts of Xingcheng Special Steel, at present, the international research on high strength, toughness and low density steel is in the laboratory stage, and there is a technical “bottleneck” in composition design and manufacturing process. Major countries in the world pay great attention to its industrialized preparation and engineering application technology.

In 2005 and 2015, Japan’s Nippon Steel and South Korea’s POSCO steel carried out industrial trial production of rolled low-density steel respectively, and there has been no successful report so far; In 2020, the United States plans to invest US $20 million in the next five years to study the composition system of low-density steel suitable for industrialization. The project is expected to be completed in 2025.

Therefore, the successful preparation of 100 ton large-scale industrialized low-density steel in China marks that the relevant technology in the industrialization and engineering application of rolled low-density steel has been ahead of the United States for nearly a decade, and has become the only country in the world to master the batch industrialized manufacturing technology and application technology of hot-rolled low-density steel with density less than 7.0g/cm3.

It is worth mentioning that the density of high-strength, high toughness and low-density steel is more than 10% lower than that of conventional high-strength steel. It has good strength and toughness. In the future, it will provide extremely important new lightweight materials for vehicles, ships, aviation, aerospace, construction and other fields, and has broad application prospects and great strategic significance.
