Reuters reported on January 4 that Toyota will surpass General Motors in sales in the United States in 2021, which means that the latter will lose its leading position in automobile sales in the United States for the first time since 1931.
In the first nine months of 2021, Toyota sold 1.86 million vehicles in the United States and GM sold 1.78 million vehicles. In 2020, the total sales volume of General Motors in the United States was 2.55 million, Toyota 2.11 million and Ford 2.04 million.
These carmakers will announce the U.S. sales results for the whole year of 2021 on Tuesday local time. According to the industry publication auto news, General Motors has been the largest auto seller in the United States since 1931. At that time, the company sold more cars in the United States than Ford.
Jack Hollis, vice president of Toyota North America group, said in a statement that Toyota thanked customers for their loyalty, but "becoming the first has never been Toyota's focus or priority".
