China’s urban pension service demand report: the per capita pension consumption is expected to exceed one million yuan in the future

The aging Finance Branch of the Chinese society of Gerontology and geriatrics, the silver economy and health wealth development index research group of Tsinghua University and everyone insurance group jointly released the report on the demand for urban elderly care services in China (2021) in Beijing on the 23rd, which provides a big data portrait of the demand for elderly care services of urban residents aged 30-85 in China. The results show that the pension consumption market has great potential in the future, and the per capita pension consumption is expected to exceed one million yuan.

The report focuses on the family structure and health status of urban residents, pension cognition and pension planning, pension demand and choice of pension institutions, pension insurance cognition and consumption motivation, and the trend of “insurance + pension”, and carries out a seven month survey, covering 800000 urban residents in 19 provinces and cities across the country.

With the acceleration of China’s aging process, the pension burden has further intensified, the dependency ratio of the elderly population has further improved, and children are facing great social pressure. The survey shows that the average age of parents aged 30 to 49 is 66, there are health worries, and their sub-health situation is serious. At the age of 40, they begin to face the inflection point of health status, and generally pay attention to health management.

At the same time, the huge pension consumption potential of groups aged 50 and over began to appear. The survey shows that the “post-60s” are about to enter the elderly, the average education level of the elderly has improved significantly, the elderly have good self-health evaluation and strong health awareness.

In terms of the concept of providing for the aged, the concept of providing for the aged is more active and the choice of providing for the aged is diversified; Elderly pension depends on themselves. In addition to a stable pension, groups aged 60 and over also have a considerable number of financial assets and real estate income such as houses as pension sources. They are also able to pursue a better quality of old-age life without relying on their children.

The survey pointed out that in the future, the per capita pension consumption is expected to exceed one million yuan: the per capita pension expenditure of groups aged 60 and above is 8341 yuan, families are willing to spend money for the elderly, and there are great opportunities in the pension service market. In particular, in the next 5 to 10 years, the problem of elderly care will become more prominent and there will be greater opportunities for the elderly care service market. Most of the elderly live independently. When their physical health changes, the demand for professional elderly care institutions or home-based community care increases objectively.

According to the survey data, from the perspective of urban residents’ pension willingness, the pension service model may need to be optimized in the future. Home-based elderly care is the foundation and currently occupies a major position. The demand proportion of community elderly care and institutional elderly care will gradually increase. Among them, more than half of the respondents are willing to choose to provide for the aged at home and hope to be taken care of by their families, or hope to carry out aging transformation at home according to the standard configuration of nursing homes, and professional institutions provide door-to-door services at the same time. With the improvement of local community governance and construction, some residents are also willing to choose community pension.

It is worth noting that more and more residents are willing to choose institutional pension. The survey shows that from the perspective of intergenerational differences, young people (“Post-70s / post-80s”) have higher acceptance of institutional pension, and the demand for institutional pension will increase significantly in the future. The report found that familiar environment is very important to the elderly, even to the extent of dependence. In this context, urban elderly care can meet the needs of the elderly to “be familiar with the living environment” and attract some elderly who choose “home-based elderly care” or “community elderly care”.

The survey also shows that compared with the self built hospitals in the suburbs, which can only meet the basic medical services, the elderly prefer the reassuring and mature medical services of the third class general hospitals in the city. At the same time, the geographical location of suburban elderly care institutions virtually increases the difficulty for children to visit the elderly and increases the “sense of abandonment” of the elderly. Chengxin elderly care can better solve the problem of children’s visit. The elderly can go back to their children’s home on weekends to enjoy family happiness.

Based on the location conditions and medical conditions provided by Chengxin elderly care institutions, 83.1% of the people who are very willing / more willing are selected, while only 2.4% of the people who are very unwilling / unwilling are selected, indicating that the product form of Chengxin elderly care institutions is in line with the core demands of residents’ elderly care and the development trend of elderly care institutions in the future.
