On February 10, according to the data released by the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO), Huawei became the largest applicant in 2021 with 6952 published PCT applications. Huawei has topped the list of applicants for five consecutive years.
It is reported that a total of 13 Chinese enterprises have entered the top 50 global PCT international patent applicants, including Huawei, oppo, BOE, Zte Corporation(000063) , vivo, Dajiang, Tencent, Xiaomi, etc.
Huawei ranked first for five consecutive years
On February 10, according to the data released by the World Intellectual Property Organization in Geneva, in 2021, Chinese applicants submitted 69500 international patent applications through the Patent Cooperation Treaty (PCT), a year-on-year increase of 0.9%. China was followed by the United States (59570 applications, + 1.9%), Japan (50260 applications, – 0.6%), South Korea (20678 applications, + 3.2%) and Germany (17322 applications, – 6.4%).
From the perspective of the company, Huawei has become the largest applicant in 2021 with 6952 published PCT applications. Followed by Qualcomm (3931), Samsung Electronics (3041), LG Electronics (2885) and Mitsubishi (2673).

According to the information released by the State Intellectual Property Office, China’s PCT international patent application again ranked first in the world in 2021, and Huawei ranked first among applicants for five consecutive years.
It is understood that Huawei began to apply for the first Chinese patent as early as 1995 and the first American patent in 1999. In 2008, it ranked first in the World Intellectual Property Organization PCT patent application for the first time. In March 2021, Huawei said in the Huawei white paper 2020 on innovation and intellectual property that continuous innovation investment makes Huawei one of the largest patent holding enterprises in the world. By the end of 2020, Huawei has held more than 40000 families of valid authorized patents (more than 100000), and more than 90% of the patents are invention patents.
Huawei insists on investing more than 10% of its sales revenue in research and development every year. In 2020, Huawei has about 105000 R & D personnel. It is reported that Huawei expects to invest more than 130 billion yuan in R & D in various fields in 2021.
13 Chinese enterprises entered the top 50
In addition to Huawei, some Chinese enterprises have entered the list. According to the information released by the State Intellectual Property Office, a total of 13 Chinese enterprises have entered the top 50 PCT international patent applicants in the world, an increase of 1 compared with 2020. Among them, oppo (2208 pieces) and BOE (1980 pieces) ranked sixth and seventh respectively.
It is understood that this is also the third consecutive year that oppo ranks second among Chinese enterprises. Oppo said that oppo intellectual property has a mature layout in the world and patents in more than 40 countries and regions. As of December 31, 2021, oppo had more than 75000 global patent applications and more than 34000 global authorizations. Among them, the number of invention patent applications exceeds 68000, and invention patent applications account for 90% of all patent applications.
The remaining 10 enterprises that have entered the top 50 are Ping An Technology (11th, + 6th), Zte Corporation(000063) (13th, + 3rd), vivo (16th, + 7th), Shenzhen Dajiang (20th, + 1st), Shenzhen Ruisheng acoustic technology (29th, + 58th), Wuhan Huaxing Optoelectronics (32nd, – 8th), Shenzhen Huaxing Optoelectronics (33rd, – 9th), Tencent (42nd, + 11th) Byte runout (bit 46, – 14), Xiaomi (bit 48, + 8).
