Gansu Provincial Department of science and technology recently issued an implementation plan for revitalizing Hexi national corn breeding and seed production base to integrate scientific and technological resources and promote the high-quality development of corn germplasm resources. According to the plan, Gansu will strive to introduce more than 200 excellent maize germplasm resources and create 200 excellent new maize germplasm by 2025, the output value of the whole industrial chain will reach more than 12 billion yuan, and the sowing area in the main maize producing areas in China will reach more than 5%.
According to statistics, by 2020, the area of maize seed production in Gansu Province has reached 1.296 million mu, with a seed yield of 546 million kg, accounting for 55.6% and 59.7% of the total area and output of the country respectively.
According to the introduction of Gansu Provincial Department of science and technology, there are still some deficiencies in Gansu corn seed production industry, such as weak breeding innovation ability, few breakthrough varieties and weak core competitiveness. According to the plan, Gansu Province will focus on introducing excellent maize germplasm resources, and apply new technologies such as ultra-low temperature to re preserve specific germplasm resources to support the needs of seed supply and distribution of germplasm resources.
Gansu will continue to strengthen technological research, and strive to establish an innovative development model of the whole industrial chain in terms of corn breeding, corn breeding and farmland soil (cultivated land) conservation, so as to promote the high-quality development of corn seed production industry.
Gansu will also establish platforms such as Gansu Corn Seed Industry Research Institute, Gansu corn breeding research center and Provincial Key Laboratory of gene editing and biological breeding, build a perfect scientific and technological talent training system, and strengthen scientific research and innovation in the fields of entrusted identification of new hybrid corn varieties, corn molecular genetic mechanism and genomics, Strive to produce a batch of high-quality research results in maize gene editing and breeding technology and create a batch of new varieties with market value.
