[afternoon opportunity]

The resumed fifth session of the United Nations Environment assembly will be held in Nairobi, Kenya and online from February 28 to March 2, 2022. At the meeting, governments around the world will discuss ways to formulate the first global treaty to deal with plastic pollution. The Chinese national standard degradation performance and labeling requirements for biodegradable plastics and products will be officially implemented from June 1, 2022.

At present, environmental protection has become the main theme of global development. Countries around the world have launched policies to promote plastic pollution control. The United Nations put forward the idea of global response to plastic pollution at the three environmental conferences in 2017. China is a large plastic consumer, accounting for 15% of plastic consumption. China has successively issued a number of plastic ban policies to control plastic pollution. Degradable plastics are the mainstream solution at present. At present, the total production capacity of degradable plastics in China is about 1.767 million tons, but the demand for degradable plastics released by the implementation of China's new plastic restriction policy is expected to reach 2.7 million tons. If the demand meets the expectation, the supply gap is still more than 930000 tons. The EU will completely ban disposable plastic products from 2021 and require that PET plastic bottles contain at least 25% recycled plastics from 2025. Since January this year, the price of recycled PET films in Europe has surged 103% and 1690 euros per cow. With the increase of policies and the continuous expansion of the application of degradable plastics, the market demand is released to a large extent, and the degradable plastics industry has ushered in explosive growth. It is suggested to focus on the leading targets in relevant fields.
