Softbank gives up selling anmou to NVIDIA

Sun Zhengyi, chairman of Softbank group, announced at a press conference on the afternoon of the 8th that Softbank had abandoned the sale of its British chip design company anmou to American chip giant NVIDIA, and said it would promote anmou’s listing plan.

Son Zhengyi said that under the condition that antitrust authorities in various countries strongly prevent the sale of anmou, Softbank group will consider promoting the initial public offering (IPO) of anmou in the fiscal year ending March 2023. He also said that anmou has returned to the growth track and is in good financial condition.

Softbank group reached an agreement with NVIDIA on the sale of anmou in September 2020, but the transaction has not progressed due to strong opposition from multinational antitrust agencies.

Experts here said that at present, most mobile chips in the world adopt anmou architecture. If NVIDIA successfully acquires anmou, the combination of the two may form a technology monopoly, which will affect many chip enterprises using anmou architecture. However, some analysts believe that the abortion of the sale of anmou plan made Softbank lose a profitable transaction.
